About Chester Races

Chester Racecourse is one of the oldest racecourses in the UK, dating back to its establishment in 1539 by Henry Gee. It is situated in the cathedral city of Chester in the county of Cheshire, UK. The racecourse has a long and illustrious history and holds a special place in the hearts of horse racing fans.

The earliest recorded race held at Chester was on February 9th, 1539, and it was organised by the then-Mayor of the city, Henry Gee. The race was a three-day event, and the prizes were given to the horses that ran the most laps.

In the succeeding centuries, racing at Chester continued to grow in popularity, with many important races being held there. In 1824, a new grandstand was constructed to accommodate the growing crowds. In 1838, the Chester Cup was established, and it has since become one of the most prestigious races in the UK racing calendar.

One of the most significant developments in the history of Chester Racecourse was the construction of the iconic Roodee paddock in 1907. This paddock provides an excellent viewing platform for the races and has become a beloved feature among racegoers.

Throughout its history, Chester Racecourse has played host to some of the greatest horses and jockeys in the world of horse racing. It has also undergone several changes and renovations, including the construction of the Chester Wall in the 1930s, which helped to prevent flooding on the course.

Today, Chester Racecourse is recognised as one of the finest racecourses in the UK and remains a popular destination for racing fans from all over the world. Its rich history and picturesque setting make it a unique and special place that will continue to be treasured for generations to come.
